The Governor's garrison holds the rampart, and the road past it is the only road. You do not have to take the fort. You only have to get past it.

The Only Road is a short, hand-painted action-platformer set in the Punjab of

the 1600s — sandstone ramparts over a wheat river, flooded stepwell galleries,

and the things that live down in the cold of them.

### The enemy tells you everything before it hits you

There are no unreadable attacks here. The garrison spearman challenges you before

he moves. He raises a guard that looks lethal and does nothing at all. His thrust

coils back behind his shield for four tenths of a second, and his heavy spends a

full two-thirds of a second just hauling the spear back — and that charge is the

move. It is the window. Learn to see it and the fight opens up.

The churail in the stepwell never closes with you. She hovers and she throws

witchfire, and rolling only buys you the next bolt. **Parry** is the answer — it

does not stop the bolt, it turns it around and sends it back, and it is her own

fire that kills her.

### What you have

- **Light and heavy.** Hold heavy and the swing freezes at the top of its

wind-up with fire climbing off you — up to five seconds, up to five times the

damage, and it knocks whoever it lands on backwards.

- **The run-stop.** Attack while you already have speed and you sprint on, skid,

and lunge — about a spearman's reach of ground, closed. It ends planted, and it

  stays planted.

- **The roll.** For as long as it plays you are intangible to everything but the

ground. You pass through him; he passes through you.

- **The parry.** Front-on, and only the back half of the animation — the braced

hold, not the raise. The wind-up is what you pay for it.

### Controls

**Keyboard** — `← →` move · `SPACE` jump · `↓` roll · `Q` light · `E` heavy

(hold to charge) · `R` parry

**Touch / mouse** — two buttons bottom left to walk, five bottom right for your

hands. Built touch-first; it plays on a phone.

---

### Honest scope

This is a **short free game** — two rooms, two enemies, maybe ten minutes if you

take your time with the spearman. It is the first thing I am putting out from a

larger project, and it is out to find out whether the combat reads to anyone but

me. **If you play it, tell me what the fight felt like** — that comment is worth

more to me than the download.
